 of Salvation"
2014 OR District Convention

Right - -  Convention logo:

The Sword is of the Spirit working through our baptism giving us strength.  The Water is going up from the font of our baptism from which we are blessed--not a thing of the past, but living waters ever present.  JOY is purple--emphasizing that true royalty--Jesus Christ is our joyous salvation.

SAVE THE DATE!

June 27, 28, 29 2014 at the Embassy Suites Portland Airport

Presented by the Mt. Hood and West Hills Zones, the Oregon District LWML 2014 Convention's theme is “JOY from the wells of salvation.” JOY will be abundant June 27-29, 2014 as the LORD fills us with vibrant JOY that energizes us to bring JOY to the world! Got that date? June 27-29, 2014 at the Embassy Suites Portland Airport for the Oregon District 2014 Convention.

Start planning to celebrate our JOY through Word, sacrament and fellowship; support, encourage and affirm our sisters in JOYful service; and share our JOY with those who have no JOY. Remember - With JOY you will draw water from the wells of salvation. (Isaiah 12:3)

Servant Event!

One Servant Event being planned for the convention is partnering with Concordia University.   It is called the Northwest Portland BackPack Lunch Program.   Our ladies would be asked to donate $5.00 on the registration form.  The money collected is sent to the Concordia Office of Servant Learning.  They buy the necessary food and the lunch bags, transport it to the Embassy Suites, where it  will be packed by our LWML ladies on Friday morning,  June 27, 2014.  These meals are often the only meal that students in this area of Portland have during the weekend.  The Concordia Students would then transport the filled lunchbags to the program’s chairman who would have them distributed to the needy children.  What a wonderful way we can “serve the LORD with gladness”.

Rev. John Heckmann

Greetings from President Kay  We’re privileged to have LWML Pastoral Counselor Rev. John Heckmann bringing the message from President Kay Kreklau to our convention in June. Rev. Heckmann has served the LWML community since the days of his first congregation, St. John Lutheran, Kramer, Nebraska. Since then, he’s served as a Zone Counselor followed by his position as District Counselor with then Nebraska South District President, Linda Reiser, who he also denotes as one of his many mentors. Ministries that have brought him great joy include the Jesus is Lord Mission Society and serving as a Board of Directors member of the Women for Life International pro-life organization. Rev. Heckmann will join OR District pastors during a special luncheon on Saturday.

Special Guests!

Adding to our JOY at the 2014 OR District Convention will be several very special guests:

1.        Our Bible Study Leader - Donna Pyle, Bible Study leader at the 2013 LWML Convention in Pittsburgh.  Author of numerous Bible studies, a DVD series, Your Strong Suit, and a small-group Bible Study, The God of All Comfort, Donna is amazed God called her to this path.  She says, "My three sisters and I grew up with horses, the whole Texas upbringing."  Donna learned life-long joys: singing, reading, playing the flute, and even twirling in the high school rifle corps, but she didn't grow up knowing Jesus."  It was several years later after her Baptism, Donna was worshipping on Good Friday and "something broke the wall around my heart," she said.  By the power of the Holy Spirit, she took another look at her faith.  "I began to understand what Christ did on the cross.  It changed everything," she recalled.  "That's when He instilled in me a voracious appetite for His Word.  I had to know Him and to know why He did that for me and for everyone.  I had to know why He would love me."  Donna's desire to take another look, a closer look, gives birth to her Bible studies. (info from Lutheran Woman's Quarterly, spring 2013)

2.        Our Missionary - Danelle Putnam, Outreach Missionary for the Developmentally Disabled in the Dominican Republic.  Danelle's work includes reaching out in various ways to people with developmental disabilities and to the families who care for them.  Danelle works to provide the often lacking help and training needed.  She also reaches out, sharing the message of salvation through Jesus and providing them with opportunities to continue to study God's Word and become a part of a church family.

3.      One Special Guest - Linda Gage, Gifts of Love Ministry.  Gifts of Love provides opportunities for LWML women to discover and use their giftedness for generosity in support of the mission and ministry of the Lord.  Linda is employed and professionally trained by the LCMS Foundation as an experienced Gift Planning Counselor serving the women of the LWML and their families.  She helps you provide for your loved ones, support your favorite ministries, and frame the discussion for sensitive life decisions.   The work of gift planning is preparing for what God has already planted in the heart of a disciple.  "God is good.  Everything happens according to His plan.  It's all in His good and perfect time!"

4.  Orphan Grain Train representatives--Heinz Piehl and his wife.  Orphan Grain Train helps Christians share personal and material resources with needy people in America and around the world.  They are on "Charity Navigator's" top 10 list--out of 7,000 charities, specifically the "List of Highly Rated Charities Relying on Private Contributions."  "We do what we do because of the love of God.  The Orphan Grain Train movement is a loving response to Jesus Christ's example as a servant and His love for us."
